What’s the Difference Between College Composition and College Composition Modular?

The CLEP College Composition exam includes multiple-choice questions and two essay assignments that test your skills in analysis, argumentation, and synthesis. Essays are evaluated by both human scorers and computer-assisted scoring, and your official exam score is typically available within 2 to 3 weeks.

The College Composition Modular exam includes only multiple-choice questions. Some test centers may offer optional essays that are scored locally by your institution, not by the College Board. Because of this, score availability and credit policies for the Modular exam vary by college.

The Modern States College Composition course prepares you for the multiple-choice sections of the College Composition CLEP exam, covering four units:

• Unit 1: Conventions of Standard Written English: grammar, syntax, punctuation, diction, and sentence structure
• Unit 2: Revision Skills: organization, evidence, tone, coherence, and sentence variety
• Unit 3: Use of Source Materials: evaluating, integrating, and citing sources in MLA, APA, and CMS styles
• Unit 4: Rhetorical Analysis: appeals, tone, structure, rhetorical devices, and evidence evaluation

The course also includes Unit 5: The Essays, which introduces the essay format and structure used on the College Composition exam, including how to write a thesis, organize body paragraphs, address counterarguments, and integrate sources. Please note that the course does not include essay submission or grading. Essay preparation is conceptual and instructional.
